What’s a Homeownership Program?

Homeownership programs are designed to help disadvantaged people become homeowners. They’re typically meant to support low or medium income earners, first-time homeowners, veterans, or “good neighbors” like teachers, paramedics, and police officers.

Each program is a little different depending on who it’s for and who’s paying for it. Assistance is typically provided by local or federal governments, non-profits, or foundations. Downpayment assistance (DPA) programs help to reduce the cost of initial down payments or provide interest-free loans.

Other programs reduce the total cost of the home or cover closing costs for buyers.
